Thanksgiving Chores and Tasks to Have Your young adult Help with this Holiday

There is a lot that goes into pulling off a successful Thanksgiving meal and with that come a lot of tasks you can involve your young adult with intellectual disabilities in to help and practice their independent living skills. Use the task ideas below or add your own.

Tasks to-do BEFORE the Thanksgiving Meal

  1. Rake leaves outside
  2. Tidy house
  3. Clean the guest bathroom
  4. Sweep & mop floors
  5. Clean out the fridge to make space for holiday groceries
  6. Assist in meal planning
  7. Write the grocery list
  8. Go grocery shopping
  9. Put groceries away
  10. Wash and chop vegetables
  11. Bake a simple dessert by following a recipe
  12. Cook a side dish or casserole
  13. Set the dining table
  14. Make a table centerpiece
  15. Write and arrange place cards for the table
  16. Take drink requests and pour beverages for guests
  17. Bring dishes to table/serve the food

Tasks to-do AFTER the Thanksgiving Meal

  1. Clear the table
  2. Put leftovers in storage containers
  3. Load the dishwasher
  4. Take out trash and recycling
  5. Launder used dish towels and cloth napkins
  6. Clean the microwave
  7. Write thank yous to guests who brought dishes
  8. Address and mail thank you cards
